Potential Changes to Supported Bus Services

As you are no doubt aware, a decision was made to reduce financial support for non-commercial bus services by £2m.  This figure accounts for around 2m of the 24m journeys made on the bus network each year. The reductions in financial support are phased over 3 years – Phase 1 - £0.5m during 2011/12, Phase 2 - £1m during 2012/13 and finally Phase 3 - £0.5m during 2013/14.

I recognise that any change to local buses could affect many people who rely on them and therefore achieving reductions is a very complex task.  A cross party member working group, chaired by Pieter Montyn have been working hard with officers and local operators to develop a list of proposals.  I have attached a short briefing note which explains the process in more detail and also contains a list of those services that might be affected over the coming months together with the likely outcome if we chose to reduce or withdraw our financial support.

We are about to embark on a 4 week impact assessment with the public in advance of a final decision on Phase 1 due to be made week commencing 20th June 2011. I write to you now so that you are aware of the proposals in advance and importantly that you might have the opportunity to comment on behalf of your residents.  Should you wish to do so please email buses@westsussex.gov.uk
