Bogus Callers

Chichester District residents are being reminded to stay vigilant as bogus callers continue to operate in the South.
There are two particular scams that the Council has been made aware of, where the caller claims to be either representing, or working for, the Council. Both involve questions about loft or other thermal insulation. After claiming to be from the Council, the caller has, in some cases, asked for the persons age.
Chichester District Council and its partner organisations would like to remind residents that they do not cold call. We would urge everyone to be vigilant and end any suspect phone call immediately. They should then report any suspicious phone calls, text messages or emails to the Council, the Police, or Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 (a 24 hour phone line).
The Council does work with a company called Sterling Assist to offer residents the best deals for cavity wall and loft insulation. Residents who are receiving certain benefits or allowances, or are aged 70 or over, can receive free cavity wall and loft insulation from them. Sterling Assist does not cold call residents. To take advantage of this offer, residents need to register their interest by calling 07925 150 577 or going to www.sterlingassist.co.uk
A spokesperson for Chichester District Council says: "Scams like this are unfortunately on the increase throughout the country and Chichester District residents need to be aware of them. No Council would contact residents in this way. We would certainly not cold call homeowners and ask for their bank details. I would urge everyone to be particularly vigilant and also keep an eye on older relatives or neighbours."
Any genuine direct phone number given by Chichester District Council would be in the format of 01243 534***. Anyone who doubts the authenticity of a call can contact the Council on 01243 785166.
