Fuel Bills

All information supplied by The Energy Saving Trust

Saving a few pounds on our energy bills is something we all want to do, especially as over the last 10 years our combined gas and electric bills have increased by approximately 125%.  Unfortunately our income has not gone up in line with this.

The good news is that basic energy efficiency measures will help us to save money. We should all look at having our properties insulated as this will help keep our homes warmer and lower our fuel bills significantly.

The insulation grant scheme in Somerset is called Warm Streets and is open to everyone living in Somerset.  If you are over 70 or in receipt of certain benefits or on a low income loft and cavity wall insulation will be free, subject to survey and funding availability. Everyone else can get a discount and pay just £150 per measure. The work will pay for itself within 1-2 years. Warm Streets also offers free benefits checks to increase household income at the same time as lowering fuel bills.

If you need some in-depth help then there is our Warmer Improved Somerset Homes (WISH) project which has been set up offering help and support to all residents over the age of 50 who live in Somerset. The project is designed to ensure people are able to continue living independently, and stay warm and well in their own homes.

The WISH project offers a free and impartial service providing individual advice and support with:

  • energy efficiency and cutting fuel bills
  • grants for insulation and heating improvements
  • Low interest loans, grants and support for home improvements and adaptations
  • checking what benefits you may be entitled to
  • A home visit service

One happy WISH client has said “I have just been changed onto a social tariff; it should certainly make managing my bills a lot easier.” The client has been shown how to use her storage heaters more efficiently, how to tackle damp and mould, how to access the cheapest tariffs for her fuel and has also had a benefits check with the result that she now pays much less Council Tax.

If you are worried about your fuel bills and would like to find out more about how WISH or Warm Streets can help you, call the Energy Saving Trust advice line free on 0800 512 012.
