About Worplesdon Parish Council

The Worplesdon Parish Council was constituted in 1894. A parish council is the most ancient form of Local Government and has been in use in England since the 8th century.

The modern parish council is a statutory elected local authority, which acts as a voice for local opinion by keeping in close and regular contact with its electorate and provides a focus for voluntary organisations in the area.

Our Council comprises of four wards which include Fairlands, Jacobs Well, Perry Hill and Wood Street Village, represented by a total of 16 councillors and the Clerk.

During the past 100 years there have been eighteen Chairmen, including two lady Chairmen. Mr A. J. Kelly OBE, JP was the longest serving Chairman, remaining in office for twenty five years. Bob McShee currently holds the post, having been elected in 1999. He is ably supported by Vice Chairman Terry Cater; Terry's father Harry served as Chairman of the Parish Council from 1976 to 1985.

Since 1894 there have been just six Parish Clerks, the longest serving being Mr and Mrs Christmas who held the post jointly for a period of fifty two years from 1894 to 1946. The present Clerk, Mrs Gaynor White was appointed in 1999.
