PRESS RELEASE

CARYFORD COMMUNITY HALL

Charity Registration No. 295286              15th December 2015

Outline

Caryford Community Hall’s Management Committee were very disappointed and frustrated to learn that their bid to take over the management of the Swainson Building (across the road from Caryford Hall) had been rejected by Somerset County Council despite more than 18 months of lengthy discussion with and encouragement from the Council.

Story

Caryford Community Hall’s Management Committee would like the people of Castle Cary and Ansford to know that they had tried their utmost to take over the management of the Swainson Building but in the end appear to have been defeated by the changing priorities of Somerset County Council.

The Committee’s objective at all times, was to help ensure that the very important community activities in the Swainson Building such as Toy Box, the Children’s Centre and the Youth Clubs are maintained.  Liz Middleton (Caryford Community Hall’s Chair) said “With our experience of running a community facility, we had hoped to be able to increase the use of the Swainson Building by local groups, and in turn the financial viability of the building. Unfortunately Somerset County Council have decided that Caryford Community Hall will not be the body managing the bookings and day-today management of the building.  We tried very hard to make this happen, but unfortunately were not successful.”

It is understand that Somerset County Council have not yet appointed any other group to take over the management of the building.

Background Notes

Swainson Building

The building is a community facility situated directly opposite Caryford Community Hall in Maggs Lane, Ansford.  The building is owned and currently managed by Somerset County Council.  It has been the long-time home of Toybox Preschool for Ansford, Castle Cary and surrounding villages.  Other activities that take place in the building include the Children’s Centre and Youth Clubs.  In May-June 2014, meetings were held by Somerset County Council to discuss the management of the building, which appeared to be under threat.  The Caryford Community Hall Committee responded with an offer of help.  Their intention being to safe-guard what they considered to be important community activities.
