09 April 2020Council Tax during coronavirus emergency
Following the query from a few residents I have been in touch with Northumberland County Council regarding the possible suspension / holiday period for payment of Council Tax. Below is the response received from NCC and I attach the links in case of need.
Thank you for your email
Unfortunately as yet there is no direct instruction received from Central Government to offer any specific discounts or options to defer payments, however things are changing on a daily basis.
Local Authorities are expected to receive some form of grant from the government to support economically vulnerable individuals and households. It is expected that most of this funding will be used to provide more Council Tax Support to those who meet the criteria.
If the residents are now on a reduced income they may be able to claim for Universal Credit and more information on that can be found here
They may qualify for some element of Council Tax Support which is means tested and they can check their entitlement here.
If they have any specific queries in relation to Council Tax Support they can contact our benefits team on telephone number 0345 600 6400 or by email at email@example.com. Please note that given the current situation we are receiving an influx of queries with limited staffing levels and therefore response times may be significantly delayed.
A payment holiday is also available for Council Tax where payments are deferred for up to 2 months. This is assessed on a case by case basis, subject to the taxpayers experiencing reduced income due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a review of their payment history. To apply for a payment deferral they can email Council Tax at firstname.lastname@example.org .Please note that given the current situation we are receiving an influx of queries with limited staffing levels and therefore response times may be significantly delayed.
As you can appreciate the Local Authority is a front line service that many people will be relying on for support in the coming months and therefore we need to keep our cash flow up and running.
I trust this clarifies matters but if you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us.
