LYNEMOUTH PARISH COUNCIL will fly a Red Ensign flag as part of national Merchant Navy Day. The event is being held to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers. The flag raising ceremony will take place on Tuesday 3rd September 2019 at 10.00 a.m. outside Lynemouth Miners’ Welfare Institute in Bridge Road, and members of the public are welcome to attend along with local veterans and Merchant Navy personnel.
Merchant Navy Day has been observed in the UK since 2000. The campaign to ‘Fly the Red Ensign’ was started to remind UK citizens - none of whom live more than 70 miles from the sea - that they depend on Merchant Navy seafarers for 95% of our imports, including half the food we eat.
