LYNEMOUTH PARISH COUNCIL flew a Red Ensign flag as part of national Merchant Navy Day. The event was held to raise awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on Merchant Navy seafarers. The flag raising ceremony took place at 10.00 a.m. on Monday, 3rd September, 2018 outside Lynemouth Miners’ Welfare Institute in Bridge Road, and local veterans and Merchant Navy personnel attended.
Merchant Navy Day has been observed in the UK since 2000. The campaign to ‘Fly the Red Ensign’ was started to remind UK citizens - none of whom live more than 70 miles from the sea - that they depend on Merchant Navy seafarers for 95% of our imports, including half the food we eat.
