MYLOR PARISH COUNCIL - CLIMATE EMERGENCY HOLDING STATEMENT

In March 2019 Mylor Parish Council declared a Climate Emergency.  This follows Cornwall Council declaring that Cornwall will become carbon neutral by 2030. This is an extremely important issue which we will be focusing on in the months ahead.

The Parish Council is currently delivering on a number of projects that recognise the need to take positive action towards reducing our carbon footprint.

  • The Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP), which will include policies on sustainable development, protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions.  This will enable us to take appropriate actions with long term benefits.
  • The Street Lights Working party which we anticipate will allow us to update some of the current street lighting which will in turn reduce energy and carbon emissions.

  • Flushing traffic management scheme which will enable us to better control traffic and provide a safer environment.
  • Undertaking an energy analysis that will feed into the NDP.

The Parish Council has also resolved not to use weed killers that are a hazard to human health and the environment.

However we know that there is more than can and needs to be done to make a difference both in the short and long term.  Following our summer break (there is no meeting in August) Climate Change will be on the agenda at the September meeting.  After this meeting we intend to engage with the community to help us develop an action plan. We cannot do it alone; we need the support of the community to make a real difference and there are many things that everyone, including our children, can get involved with.
