John Herbert Briggs

Private, The Northamptonshire Regiment

(1886 - 1914)

John Herbert Briggs was born on April 10, 1886, in Wadenhoe, Northamptonshire to Frances (Fanny) Trayford, age 26, and agricultural labourer William Briggs, age 27. His mother died when he was 4.

He enlisted in Northampton into the Northamptonshire Regiment, aged 20, in May 1906. [Service No.7993].

On 13th August 1914 he was with 1st Btn Northants Regmt when they landed at Le Havre, Normandy, France.

He was killed in action near Ypres fighting with "A" Company on 3rd November 1914. 

He is remembered on Panel 43 of the Menin Gate at Ypres in Belgium.

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal ('Pip, Squeak & Wilfred').

He is remembered on Wadenhoe War Memorial and Church plaque.
