Bowls Club

Fancy a game?

We are looking for new members and would love to hear from you if you are interested in learning more!

Bowls is a great game for all ages; some clubs have players as young as 14.

We can let you borrow some equipment; we play on our village green which is next to Baxter Farm at the east end (A46 end) of the village.

Club Night is Monday 6-8pm. Please pop along or contact Eric or Monica Smith 880087

Willoughby Bowls Club began its history in 1925 when an uneven strip of Land (donated by a Mrs Clarke of Baxter Farm) was somehow converted into a 'flattish' green of four rinks by a few stalwarts of the village. Photographs of these early pioneers hang in the Clubhouse.

Permission to continue the use of the green continued thanks to the new owner of Baxter Farm, Mr Guy Nixon, who took over ownership of the land. Fortunately, he was also a bowler and became President of the Club; a position he maintained
until his death in 1972.

On the disposal of his Estate, the Club was offered the chance to purchase the land freehold for £300. After a deal of soul searching, the membership raised the money leading to the present situation. Finally, in the more recent past, two further rinks were added.

Unfortunately, whilst the Contractor prepared the extra area to accommodate the two new rinks, he promptly sold off the topsoil. The condition of the two later rinks has thus never been of the quality of the original four.

The constitution of the Bowls Club is vested in four Trustees who are responsible for the assets. If the club should ever have to fold up, the Trustees would be required to dispose of the assets and the proceeds would be spread amongst other similar facilities in the locale.

We are obviously intent on continuing the long tradition of bowling in Willoughby and look forward to many years of pleasant and happy times on the Green both in 'needle match' contests and also friendly rivalry.

We play in three leagues, two of which are associated with 'The Belvoir League', which involves us travelling to very interesting villages as far as Grantham whilst the third league (referred to as the Wednesday Mixed League) is generally in the other direction even as far as Overseal in Derbyshire.

Team Captains for the Belvoir Leagues are respectively Keith Graham and John O'Donogue and for the other League Baz Haynes. Over the years, we have finished top of the Belvoir Two Woods League eleven times and won the Knock Out Cup five times. Many other honours have also been collected over the years.

It is a lovely tranquil spot to which people can walk and just enjoy the surroundings without necessarily taking part, but of course, if people wish to have a go, they would be helped with sets of bowls that we have available for newcomers to use
