Worplesdon Heritage Map 2012

Artist Rosemary Pocock at the unveiling ceremony

In early 2011 the Parish Council resolved to create a lasting legacy for future generations in commemoration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

It was agreed that the Parish Council commission an artist to illustrate the most attractive and historic buildings in the parish and that they be constructed around a map of the parish.

There are in fact 45 Grade II Listed buildings and structures in Worplesdon ranging from magnificent mansions, through Tudor farm houses to old barns and even a Bronze Age burial Barrow on Whitmoor Common. If we had tried to put all of these on a map it would have covered the whole wall of a house.  Selection was required!

A very small advisory committee was set up consisting of councillors and residents with relevant knowledge and experience.  The Grade II buildings list was searched for the most architecturally interesting and accessible examples.

The committee refined the list of properties to be illustrated to around 20.  Other listed structures such as Bower`s Lock and the Bronze Age burial site were also included. This allowed us to contain the Map to a reasonable 5ft by 4ft format.   The burial urns from the bronze age site, dug up in the 1800`s by General Pitt   Rivers are still in the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford. We were able to photograph these wonderful and largely intact artefacts for the Parish archive.

Local artist Rosemary Pocock was selected to paint our Heritage Map. The fabulous result now hangs in the Worplesdon Memorial Hall. Rosemary not only did all the illustrations but also the calligraphy.

The Heritage Map was unveiled on 26th May by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Dame Sarah Goad whilst the Mayor of Guildford, Jennifer Jordan, also joined in the unveiling occasion. Full sized framed copies were given by the Parish Council to our other three villages, Wood Street, Jacobs Well and Fairlands, to hang in their own community facilities.

Half size, framed copies 2.5ft x 2ft can be purchased at a cost of £200 and unframed, half size prints are available at £70.  Please contact either Dr Cragg on 01483 531597 or the Clerk to the Council on 01483 300094 or email clerk@worplesdonpc.co.uk
