The Olympic Torch Relay will be passing through Darlington on Sunday 17 June 2012 and will arrive from Newton Aycliffe via the A167 Durham Road to High Beaumont Hill at approximately 4pm where the first Torch Bearer will start the relay through Darlington.
The Olympic Torch Relay will travel along the following route:
The A167 Durham Road, North Road, High Northgate, Northgate and St Cuthbert’s Place (between Northgate and Freemans Place). It will then travel along the B6279 Freemans Place and Haughton Road and then turn right into the College grounds.
The Torch Relay will consist of two convoys, the Activation convoy and the Flame Convoy. The Activation Convoy will arrive 10 minutes prior to the Flame Convoy and will consist of the sponsors’ vehicles that will be handing out samples and entertaining the awaiting crowds.
The Flame Convoy will arrive 10 minutes later, and with it will be the Olympic Torch Bearers who will be dropped off at their identified locations.
Road Closures
Following consultation with the police and traffic management it has been agreed to have a rolling road closure, this means the roads the Convoy is travelling on will close automatically when the Convoy arrives. The anticipated time the Torch Relay will be in Darlington is from 3:30pm until 6:00pm.
Roads will open as soon as the Torch Relay has passed.
No other roads are closed however traffic will be very busy on any neighbouring roads ahead of the Torch Relay and whilst it passes through.
For residents who live in Hartlea Avenue there will be no vehicle access onto the A167 from your property whilst the Torch Relay passes your street entrance.
Residents who live on North Road and are facing the Torch Relay Route. The Borough Council have asked residents to refrain from parking their vehicles on the road in front of their house and park in a side street near by to ensure the safe passing of the Torch Relay.
