CELEBRATING TREE CHARTER DAY

Tree Charter day on the last Saturday in November marked the beginning of National Tree Week, the UK’s largest annual tree celebration. The WOODLAND TRUST donated FREE trees (400 saplings) to the local community and the Parish Council planted them mainly on the strip of council owned amenity land adjacent to Barron's Walk near Chester Square and Jubilee Cottages, and on the strip of woodland behind the pit wheel as replacements for dead or fallen trees, to help combat climate change and establish food and shelter for wildlife and create a living legacy for future generations. The species are: hazel; willow; birch; crabapple; and hawthorn. In normal circumstances, the local community would have been invited to volunteer to assist in the planting, something which is nigh-on impossible during the pandemic and a period of lockdown. The free tree packs have been generously funded by lead partners Sainsbury's, players of the People's Postcode Lottery, Lloyds Bank, Ovo Energy, Joules, Bank of Scotland, and Sofology.
