PRECEPT
The primary source of income for most Parish Councils comes from the Precept, part of the Council Tax.
What is a Precept?
The Parish Council receives a small proportion of the local Council Tax. It does not receive any direct funding from Central Government. The funding collected pays for the running of the Parish Council and the services it provides.
How is the Precept raised?
Northumberland County Council collects your Council Tax on behalf of themselves, Police, Fire and the Parish Councils within their area.
How is it calculated?
The budget is set by the Parish Council every year for the following financial year and it is at that time that Parish Councillors consider financing future and ongoing projects.
The budget will include any projected income and its reserves. The Precept will be the balancing amount that the Parish Council requires to deliver its work in the next financial year.
The Precept is calculated as an amount per Council Tax Band D Property and added to the Council Tax Bill of all the dwellings within the Parish area. An explination of this can be found on your Council Tax Bill.
