Dear Chair,

We are writing to ask you to support Alnwick’s Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery in 2019 with funding by way of a grant to help us survive the current, harsh financial climate. As an independent, charitable organisation we rely entirely on the income we generate ourselves.

Bailiffgate is an award-winning, independent, local Museum & Gallery, preserving and celebrating the heritage of Alnwick and district.  We support local communities by providing displays, activities and resources and offer a popular programme of heritage talks to local organisations, all delivered by volunteers. Our Gallery exhibition and events programme attracts local people and visitors to the area.

We are an accredited Museum under the Arts Council National Accreditation Scheme and have been recognised locally, regionally and nationally with awards.  In 2018 we were the only volunteer museum shortlisted for the Best Project on a Small Budget at the national Museum & Heritage Awards.

We have a long track record of delivering community projects supported by a range of external funders.   As you may know, from 2019 – 2022 we will be delivering the Out of Town (OOT) Museum Project in the Coquet Valley including your parish, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. OOT will celebrate the rural heritage of Coquetdale and will collect and record memories and stories told in local voices, along with photographs, audio, documents and other artefacts. New heritage records will be created and archived within the Bailiffgate Collection and within Northumberland Archives.

We are volunteer led and run but it still costs us around £110 to open the doors of the Museum and Gallery six days a week.  External funders for projects such as OOT do not cover our core costs.

We are more than happy to come to your Parish Council and talk about our work and/or welcome your Councillors with a guided tour of Bailiffgate from one of our volunteers.

Yours faithfully,

Deb Still
