Hurworth School
Article from Ian Holme- Hurworth Parish Councillor and School governer;

It was extremely disapointing to hear that our Secondary School will not now be receiving the much needed capital investment as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme.
Whilst Hurworth schools continued success is something we can all be very proud of, the need for investment in the buildings is crucial for future generations of young people in our Parish.
The new Govenment is now proposing a new range of options for how state schools are run and managed, including "Free Schools" set up by the community and a new Academy programme, releasing schools from Local Authority control.

In recent Press Release, the Schools Headmaster, Dean Judson, explained the reasoning behind the decision to explore the possibility of Hurworth taking Academy status;

"Along with every other outstanding school in the country, Hurworth School recently received a letter from the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, asking us to consider converting to academy status. Whilst we are familiar with what academies meant and looked like under the previous Labour government, we are as yet unclear about the new coalition's vision for academies.  To find out more and, in particular, what potential benefits there might be for our school, Hurworth's governing body, at a scheduled termly meeting held on 18th June,  decided to express an interest with the Department of Education.  Once we have received this information we will then be in a more informed position to consider it further in the autumn term."

We hope to be able to provide further information on this Expression of Interest as details become available.
