Northern Powergrid is working to make our Byrness community more resilient to power
cuts. Byrness relies on a single overhead power line, which means storms and high winds
often disrupt our power. To help, a 200kWh back-up battery has been installed as part of
the project. When the necessary operational processes are developed, we will be able to
switch from the local network to the back-up battery during a power cut – keeping us
connected to power while Northern Powergrid works to locate and repair the fault. In a
major power cut, we will be alerted that we are ‘on battery’ and urged to conserve power.
