Parish Council News Update June 202
WEST WITTON PARISH COUNCIL has been advised that British Telecom intends to remove this payphone:
WEST WITTON, LEYBURN / DL8 4NA (telephone number 01969623313).
North Yorkshire Council and the community now have the opportunity to support or object to the removal.
Please note that BT intends to remove the payphone and phone box. The community may object to this, but the decision rests with BT. If the community do want to save the phone box for another use this is the opportunity to do so.
There is the opportunity to Adopt the Payphone Box for another use before the payphone is removed at a cost of just a £1. Should you wish West Witton Parish Council to adopt the payphone and have suggestions for an alternative use of the payphone box, please contact Alyson Jones, Clerk to the Council, email: westwittonparishclerk@yahoo.co.uk before
19 June 2025.
The BT Consultation Stages
We are currently in the 90 Day Notice period for a last public call box removal. BT cannot remove a last public call box if one or more of these actions apply:
· it does not have coverage from all 4 mobile network providers
· it is sited in a high-frequency accident or suicide location
· there have been 52 or more calls made from the call box in the past year
· there is other evidence of reasonable user need for the public call box
We are asking for any comments to be in relation to at least 1 of these 4 actions in order for BT to then make their decision to continue to remove the payphone or not.
What you need to do:
Please send your comments on the potential removal of the payphone and/or an intention to adopt the payphone for another use to either:
Alyson Jones, Parish Clerk, email: westwittonparishclerk@yahoo.co.uk by 19 June 2025.
Or direct to North Yorkshire Council no later than 20 June 2025 by email to: LocalPlanNYC@northyorks.gov.uk
Or by post to: Planning Policy and Place Team, North Yorkshire Council, County Hall, Northallerton DL7 8AD
Should BT decide to remove the payphone, there is no further opportunity to object or to contact BT after this date to adopt the payphone box.
