Regional Armature Road Race FAQs

What is a road race?

These are bunch races that take place on the open road over a pre-determined lap or laps. Riders sign on at an HQ before the race begins in a ‘neutralised’ form – allowing the peloton to group up before racing commences. On occasions riders will attempt to leave the bunch behind and form a break away if successful two or more groups will race to be the first across the line.

What support do riders have?

Supporting the race will be a small convoy of vehicles, three or four cars, and four to six motorcycles, their role is to ensure riders are racing withing the rules and also to notify other road users that the cyclist are approaching so that everyone can remain safe. In addition to the convoy there will be 20+ static marshals manning junctions around the route, their role will be to halt traffic when the riders are approaching to ensure safe passage, this stopping of traffic will last no more that 2min each junction before drivers are released to carry on their journeys.

Will the roads be closed?

For this level of race, the roads will not be closed to other users, there may be a scenario where a car or vehicle is held at a junction for a short period to allow the race convoy to pass through safely, but the road will remain open in both directions during the race.

Will I still be able to get deliveries?

Yes, because the roads are open as normal all delivery vehicles are able to access properties around the route.

What route will the riders take?

The race route is based around a lap from Brook and passing through Chale, Shorwell, and Brighstone. The woman riders will race for 2 laps and the male for 3. There will also be a finishing section from Brook to Freshwater bay and up to the viewpoint carpark.

How will I know the race is passing through?

Although there is no way of knowing exactly when the riders will pass through a specific area we do know that the Woman’s race will start at 10am and finish at approximately 12 o’clock, the Men’s race will start at 1pm and finish at approximately 3.30pm. Ahead of, and following the race will be a car marked with signs to identify the race, these vehicles are used to inform other road users where the race is and that caution needs to be applied.

Does the route need to be clear of cars?

For this level of racing, we are not required to clear the route Instead the lead car and motorcycle support will identify areas where cars are parked and notify the riders in advance. We would ask that where possible people in the local area use their driveways and avoid parking on the roadside if they can.

What arrangements have been made for blue light services?

Planning for the events involves the Police, Fire, Rescue and Ambulance Services and other critical services. Any situation to be dealt with quickly and safely. Emergencies will be treated in the usual way and given priority on the road to allow swift passage. The safety of residents and visitors will be dealt with as a priority.
