22 October 2024Community SpeedWatch

The Parish Council has been working with Northumberland County Council and Northumbria Police for some time now to tackle the issue of speeding through Otterburn.

There are a couple of projects ongoing to assist with this and up-to-date details can be found in the meeting minutes

Different options are required and Northumbria Police have recently opened a scheme for volunteers to apply for Community SpeedWatch (CSW).

CSW is a national initiative which plays a vital role in helping to reduce speeding vehicles. The scheme aims to educate drivers on the importance of road safety and make motorists aware that the community won’t tolerate speeding. It’s about taking positive action, with local people working together with Northumbria Police to improve the safety and quality of life for everyone in the area.

As a CSW volunteer, you’ll deploy on 20mph or 30mph roads identified by yourselves, the police, and police partners where speeding is perceived to be an issue. You may also get the chance to participate in organised Speed Operations! You’ll receive training in the use of handheld speed detection equipment, data recording and protection, and roadside health and safety.

Northumbria Police ask that you volunteer a minimum of two hours per month if you are able, however they would encourage you to offer your time only as and when is suitable. They do ask that you volunteer in groups of two to four, during daylight hours only and in safe weather conditions.

If you are concerned about speeding in your area, then please register your interest for the next course to become a Community Speedwatch Volunteer!
