As winter takes hold the spring of 2017 may seem far way away but engineers have planned an essential scheme for then which will help ensure people can keep warm in the future.
Ageing gas mains in Mount Pleasant Road, Queens Crescent, Knights Avenue Highbury Grove, Bents Close, Cody Road and Lanchester Close in Clapham, Bedfordshire are nearing the end of their service life and engineers plan to replace them in April and May 2017. The tough new pipes should last for decades and help safeguard safe and reliable gas supplies to the area.
To ensure roadworks in the area are kept to a minimum the project been scheduled to be done in coordination with Anglian Water’s work to replace local water mains and the local authority’s work to resurface the roads involved..
People can find out more about the gas mains replacement project at a special drop in event to be held on Thursday 19 January between 4pm and 7pm at Clapham Village Hall, High Street, Clapham, MK41 6BP.
Project Engineer Dilbir Chana said: “We’ve carefully planned this essential project and we’re doing everything we can to make sure we deliver it with as little disruption as possible.
“We’ve coordinated our work with Anglian Water’s mains replacement scheme and the local authority’s road resurfacing work which means planned roadworks in these streets can be got out of the way in one fell swoop.”
The new gas pipes will also be inserted into the old mains wherever possible which will mean less digging in the roads.
Work will also involve replacing service pipes to properties. To do this engineers will need to temporarily disconnect the gas supply and will need access to properties. Those affected will be contacted to arrange access. People are reminded that they should ask to see official identification from engineers trying to enter their property. All staff working for National Grid carry official identity cards.

“The project will help ensure that local people keep on enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating”
