Focus Group Influencer – Beds Youth Council (BYC) (13 – 17 year olds)
Bedfordshire Police and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to young people living within Bedfordshire between the ages of 13 and 17 years old to establish a Beds Youth Council (BYC) and become a focus group influencer.

About the Beds Youth Council (BYC)
The aim of the BYC is to encourage local young people to have their say on how we can improve the quality of policing and to improve trust and reassurance within our community. The group will give Bedfordshire Police advice on issues that affect young people, for example, after a serious crime or incident. They will also consult with us on plans and policies that might impact on youth culture, offering a new way in which to make a difference to how young communities are policed.

The BYC members, will initially be between the ages of 13 and 17 years old and drawn from a broad range of backgrounds. It will include those who may be at risk of entering the criminal justice system, ex-offenders and victims of crime or come from areas where youth violence is part of their everyday lives. This offers a continual perspective from those who may be most affected and it allows the Bedfordshire Police and Crime Commissioner and the Force to fully hear the voices of young people across Bedfordshire.

The vision of the BYC is to allow young people to have the chance to:
 Speak directly with police officers and decision makers to “youth proof” policies, protocols and strategies.
 Provide advice to Bedfordshire Police to help monitor and improve the quality of the policing service being delivered and help them understand issues that affect youth.
 Build relationships between police, young people and the community
 Have their voice heard and express views openly and honestly in a constructive way.
 Considerown biases.
 Raise the profile of young people within the community.
 Improve leadership skills.
Initial Focus groups will allow influencers the opportunity to build the shape of
the BYC by making decisions about:
 Meeting dates
 Meeting times
 Meeting locations
 Agenda items
 Incentives
 Develop other methods of engagement i.e. online platforms etc.

Initially, three focus groups will be held. These will be in Luton, Central Bedfordshire
and Bedford.
Successful applicants must be available to attend the first Focus Group Meeting
which will be held at 6:00pm on Tuesday 25th February 2020 at Central
Bedfordshire College, Dunstable Campus (Main Campus), Dunstable,
Bedfordshire, LU5 4HG.

To apply, please complete the equal opportunities form and the short expression of
