'Downtown Ferrensby'
The background of the photograph entitled 'Downtown Ferrensby' is the cottage to which my grandparents, Walter and Edith Simpson, moved in 1949, with the old chapel at which my great-aunt, Laura Faircliffe, used to play the organ.
I remember it's being converted.
The 'green' now occupied by the post-box and the notice-board had on it a forge during WWII.

Ferrensby and the General Tarleton
It is interesting to see the mention of the Blue Bell in Ferrensby in the 1800s - I first saw this on a map of 1851 and it was situated right next to the pond.
As the house which replaced it was extremely damp, the pub must have been so.
Also interesting that the Baines directory (not a relative to my knowledge) mentions the 'Colonel Tarleton' - I don't know when it became the 'General', but my grandfather (Walter Simpson) kept it for 42 years until 1947 as the 'General'

As far as I understand, most the original Blue Bell Inn building is still next to the pond. I certainly wouldn't describe it as damp, though parts of the garden can get soggy when the pond outlet gets blocked!

According to Wikipedia, in 1794 Tarleton was promoted to Major-General, in 1801 to Lieutenant-General and in 1812 to General.

Many thanks for your information, Mr. Marshall.
As an extra, one of the inhabitants of the three cottages behind the 'General' was my great-aunt, Miss Laura Faircliffe - the Arkendale school-teacher who is buried at Arkendale. The other two were Mr. Arthur Barker and Mr. Fred Whincup.
