John Melton Spencer

Drummer, The Leinster Regiment

(Abt 1885 - 1915)

John Melton Spencer was born about 1885, in Wadenhoe, Northamptonshire to Sarah Ann Melton, age 38, and Henry George Spencer, age 37. He had one brother and four sisters. They are on the Wadenhoe Census in 1901. His father died in 1909 when John was 24.

John enlisted in the Leinster Regiment in Thrapston early in 1914.

On 12th September 1914 John was with the 2nd Btn Leinsters when they landed at St Nazaire in France.

Drummer John Melton Spencer, Service No.8256, of the 2nd Bn. Leinster Regiment, was Killed in Action at Ypres in Flanders, Belgium, aged 30, on 5th November 1915.

He is buried in Voormezeele Enclosures No.1 and No.2, Grave II.C.09, near Ypres, Belgium.

John was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

John is remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials.
