20 mph Advisory Speed Limit Signs for Wadenhoe

"We have recently installed six new temporary signs below the 30mph speed limit signs on all three of the entrances into the village. They will be in place throughout the summer.

Back in 2021 the parish council lobbied Highways to be included in any roll out of its then pilot scheme which was to take place in the west of the county to evaluate the effectiveness of 20 mph speed limit signs where 30mph was the norm.  We are now part of a limited roll out.

We hope these 20 mph advisory signs will remind motorists to exercise careful speed management when entering Wadenhoe where there are pedestrians’, horses, cyclists’ and concealed drives.

But will these signs change drivers’ behaviour?  In November 2022 Highways conducted a speed traffic survey on the narrow, single track part of the Pilton Road adjacent to The Old Rectory to establish benchmark speeds in this part of the village. The results show most driver’s speeds were in excess of 20mph but under the current 30mph speed limit. The survey results are shown below.

Ideally a follow-up traffic survey would give us data for a ‘before and after’ comparison. However, we have been told our traffic survey was probably the smallest ever undertaken in Northamptonshire, the implication being we may not get another.

It would be helpful, therefore, once the signs have been in place for a while to have residents and road users’ observations. So, we’ll be asking residents to complete a short questionnaire on what impact the signs have on them.  Details of the survey will be published here on the website."
